Physical exam: Furry friends can't tell us where they are hurting. Your vet, however can make sure they are healthy or tells what is hurting them. We perform screening tests to catch diseases as early as possible to be able to manage them before they get to advanced stages.
We also issue international health certificates for those pets that will be travelling with their owners to other countries.

Vaccines and immunization: By vaccinating our dog and cats we can prevent non curable and deadly viral diseases. All puppies and kittens need three rounds of vaccinations at eight, twelve and sixteen weeks of age. Adult dogs and cats need a yearly booster as well, to keep them immune from diseases.
Distemper, parvo, parainfluenza and hepatitis are the core vaccines for dogs. Bordetella (kennel cough) and Leptospirosis (a common disease between humans and animals) are among the most important vaccines for dogs too.
Rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia are the core vaccines for cats. Leukemia is also important especially for indoor/outdoor cats.
Rabies immunization is mandatory for dogs and cats to keep them and us safe. There are always reports of rabid wild animals such as bats, raccons and foxes and it is best to keep them immune for Rabies.

Microchipping: Microchips are small devices the size of a grain of rice that can be put under the skin of pets. They have an individual unique number that is then registered to your address and phone number. In the event that your pet gets lost, they can be scanned and returned to you.

Spay/Neuter: Spaying and neutering of pets helps prevent overpopulation, so all dogs and cats have homes. This procedure at six months of age can prevent behavioral problems as well as future genital cancers.
It is a same day surgery, meaning that drop off is in the morning and pickup is in the afternoon to ensure they don't have the stress of being away from home. It is best to do this procedure at 6 months before first heat.

Dentistry: Cats and small breed dogs are more prone to tartar build up on their teeth. Although we recommend pet owners to brush their pet's teeth, not all pets are cooperative. Bad breath, gingivitis and loose teeth are the result of tartar buid up on the teeth. Bacteria may enter the blood stream and cause heart, kidney or liver damage. At Bayviewwoods A.H. we clean your pet's teeth with ultrasonic scaler and  polisher to make them shiny again.

Laboratory tests: We have in house blood chemistry and CBC analyzers for emergency cases and we can also send blood, urine, fecal or other samples to the lab for more specialized tests. Are your pets urinating in the house? Other than behaviour, this can be an indicator of UTI. Our lab will perform a urinalysis to confirm this, so we can make sure your furry ones are happy and healthy again.
.
X-Rays and ultrasound:  At Bayviewwoods Animal hospital we have digital X-Rays. We can take very clear diagnostic images of internal organs and bones. We also have the possibility to send the images to specialists for more accurate diagnosis.
We work with a digital imaging company that enables us to do Electrocardiography, Echocardiography (heart) and abdominal ultrasounds in the hospital for further diagnosis.

Nutritional consultation: As our pets get older, they become less active and so put on weight. There are many different prescription foods that help your pet lose their extra weight. Many dogs or cats are also prone to urinary infections and crystals in their urine. We can prevent crystal formation or disolve those present. Puppies and kittens have different nutritional needs than adult ones. Feeding the proper diet to our pets is the cornerstone to keeping them healthy and happy.

Other surgeries: We at the Bayviewwoods animal hospital perform most soft tissue surgeries. Bladder stone removal, urinary blockage, foreign body removal from the stomach or intestine, cesarian section, pyometra, hernia repair, eye and ear surgeries, mass removals are a few that can be mentioned.
Some orthopedic procedures can be done in the hospital by orthopedic surgeon but complicated cases will be referred to referral hospitals.

Heartworm testing and prevention: Heartworms are transmitted by mosquito bites. Blood samples show if our pets are infected by this worm. The test will be done in early spring (April) which is called heartworm season and if it is negative then we can prevent the infection by using montly medications during spring, summer and early fall. These medications in the form of oral or topical can also prevent fleas and ticks. Ignoring the heartworm prevention can put our pets at risk of having worms in their heart which is costly and dengerous to treat.
